Four Redesigns I did for She Has No Head’s new article by Kelly Thompson

The theme were characters that need a redesign.

My pal Kelly Thompson has an awesome post up this week with some redesigns of female costumes by Kris Anka and Meredith McLaren. Above are Anka’s design for Raven, Harley Quinn, Starfire and Emma Frost. Go take a look. Sadly the comments more than meet internet commenting standards.

Hey look, you CAN draw TOTALLY PRACTICAL super heroine costumes!! I love these redesigns, now if only the comic world got it’s head in the game…

I bought Injustice last thursday and haven’t stopped playing it since. I’ve beat the story mode already, unlocked all the alternate costumes, and started working on completing classic battle mode with every character.

I love playing this game, I love playing female characters in this game, but at the same time it’s kind of embarrassing.

When I’m playing with my friends and it’s all about jiggle physics during Sinestro’s ending, thongs (or opposite-thong (why?) Catwoman), or Wonder Woman’s perfectly-framed tits… Well, then I have to whip out Hawkgirl and bring the mace.

When it’s the first thing you notice/talk about, is it ‘radfem’ of me to dislike fanservice, especially when it’s bias?

LET ME EXPLAIN YOU A THING

do you know how hard it is to be a teacher in the current economy? do you know what it’s like to frantically prepare students for standardized tests that contain literally nothing you feel like they need to learn but you have to ensure that they score well on them otherwise not only could you lose your job but also the school could lose funding

which means that funding for resources like

subsidized lunches

computers for the lab

the fucking librarian’s fucking salary

could dry up?

do you know what it would be like to be hired expecting twenty children in a class but then half of your colleagues get fired so you suddenly have forty children in a class? and then if you’re an average middle or high school teacher you have five or six or sometimes seven classes?

yeah in case you can’t do math because you were too busy making fun of your teacher to pay attention, that’s 200 or 240 or fucking 280 students. and at least 75% of them turn in every assignment. and then you have to grade them, knowing that if you don’t assign x amount of papers your class could get audited and, unless you have tenure (which some teachers now don’t get until seven years after they have the job - that’s SEVEN FUCKING YEARS OF NOT KNOWING IF YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE A JOB THE FOLLOWING YEAR) you could lose your job if the administration doesn’t find your class adequate?

also, on top of grading papers, some districts require teacher regularly undergo retraining for students with disabilities, students with english as a second language, sexual assault counseling, bullying prevention, and community relations? and they’re supposed to do all of this on an average salary of $45,000 a year (which is only slightly more than one year of university, aka in order to pay for their undergrad student loans plus their grad school loans they would have to do nothing but pay down loans with their salaries for six fucking years and not buy food or shelter)?

also, side note: teachers do not ever “get the summer off.” they’re planning the shit out of the school year, and attending training days, and researching ways to make their teaching more effective, and handling panicking parents whose students will be entering their classes next year. “summer off” my ass. teachers work as hard during the summer as they do during the school year.

people on this website complain about being stressed out for a lot of things - some serious, some not.

but imagine the stress of having in your care the education of over two hundred people while paying off an astronomical debt to do an often thankless job

As if the game shouldn’t already come with a mini-refrigerator due to its brutal murdering of Lois Lane, we now have this intro video of Batgirl that shows her being shot in the pages of The Killing Joke.

No, I’m serious. Really.

Because no one ever, ever has ever thought to have Barbara Gordon and the Joker face off again.

Because Barbara Gordon is all about getting shot by the Joker. Let’s forget whatever other skills she may have.

Because you couldn’t just have her beat the shit out of the Joker ‘cause, oh I don’t know, he’s a bad guy.

Nope, let’s keep showing that flying coffee cup from a story which is dangerously close to torture porn.

Let’s keep showing that blood stain on her skirt.

Because you really need this motivation for a game which involves superheroes beating the shit out of each other. Superman can’t be just crazy. He has to kill his wife and baby. Batgirl can’t just be an ass kicker. We have to relive the decision to “cripple the bitch”.

What happens if you flip gendered book covers?

You are informed about a book’s perceived quality through a number of ways. Probably the biggest is the cover.

And the simple fact of the matter is, if you are a female author, you are much more likely to get the package that suggests the book is of a lower perceived quality. Because it’s “girly,” which is somehow inherently different and easier on the palate. A man and a woman can write books about the same subject matter, at the same level of quality, and that woman is simple more likely to get the soft-sell cover with the warm glow and the feeling of smooth jazz blowing off of it.

This idea that there are “girl books” and “boy books” and “chick lit” and “whatever is the guy equivalent of chick lit”* gives credit to absolutely no one, especially not the boys who will happily read stories by women, about women. As a lover of books and someone who supports readers and writers of both sexes, I would love a world in which books are freed from some of these constraints.
